1. A short introduction about the temple
Nestled on the sandy shore of Dau Be Island, at the meeting point of Ha Long Bay and Lan Ha Bay, Ba Men Temple is a small yet culturally significant sanctuary deeply connected to the lives of local fishermen. Also known as Chua Ba Temple, it has been a place of worship for generations, where fishing families pray for safe voyages, favorable weather and prosperity at sea.
Beyond its spiritual importance, Ba Men Temple offers visitors a different perspective on Ha Long Bay, one that goes beyond its spectacular limestone karsts and emerald waters to reveal the traditions, legends and beliefs of its coastal communities.
2. History and spiritual significance
According to local legend, Ba Men was a woman who died in a boat accident at sea. Fishermen found her remains near Đầu Bê Island, buried her and established a shrine in her memory. Over time, she became revered as a guardian spirit who protects fishermen from storms and dangers at sea.
For generations, local fishing families have visited the temple to pray for safe voyages, favorable weather, good catches and prosperity. This makes Ba Men Temple more than a sightseeing stop: it offers visitors a glimpse into the spiritual traditions and seafaring culture of the Ha Long–Cat Ba community.
The annual temple festival takes place on the 19th and 20th days of the first lunar month. Ceremonies include incense offerings and prayers, while traditional festivities may feature boat racing and community games.

3. When is the best season to visit?
- March–April - Recommended - Spring generally offers pleasant temperatures and attractive scenery for cruising, sightseeing and exploring the temple. It is also a good time to experience the local festival if your dates coincide with the lunar calendar.
- May–August: Summer is warm and lush, making it appealing for boat trips, kayaking and swimming where permitted. However, heavy rain, tropical storms and rough seas can disrupt cruises, particularly in the summer storm season.
- September–November - Autumn is another attractive period, often bringing comfortable temperatures and clear views. Storms can still occur, especially early in the season, so check the marine forecast before departure.
- December–February - Winter is cooler and may be misty, creating atmospheric scenery but sometimes reducing visibility. It can suit travelers who prefer cooler weather and a quieter sightseeing experience.
